Washington, D.C., collects record sports wagers in October

Washington, D.C., sports bettors wagered a record $65.8 million in October, according to unaudited data from the D.C. Lottery, a 13.5 percent increase from the previous record of $58 million set last month.

The District reported its second-best sports betting revenue of $6.6 million, behind the $8.1 million collected in September. FanDuel generated $4.2 million in revenue and accounted for more than 63 percent of the total.

October marked Fanatics Sportsbook’s first full month of operating in Washington after launching in the District on September 12. This sportsbook reported the most significant month-over-month handle increase of 196.4 percent, rising from $700,000 to almost $2.2 million. The sportsbook had 11 additional days of wagering in October.

The two leading contributors, FanDuel and DraftKings, reported a rise in wagers compared to September. FanDuel’s handle rose from $30.5 million to $36.7 million, while DraftKings collected $16.0 million in bets compared to $14.9 million in September. Meanwhile, BetMGM, Caesars and Sports & Social reported a drop in handle.

Washington sports betting handle increased 513.5 percent compared to last October, when GambetDC operated as the district’s sole sports betting platform. FanDuel took over from Gambet in April, prompting the July launch of DraftKings, BetMGM and Caesars.
