The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Bangladesh has launched its first large-scale enforcement action nationwide against online gambling and betting platforms under the newly implemented Cybersecurity Act of 2025. This operation focuses on addressing the social issues brought about by the rapid spread of digital gambling platforms, particularly among the youth.

The CID highlighted that illegal online gambling poses severe social and economic harm, including addiction, family breakdowns, and even a rise in suicide cases. Investigations have revealed that over 1,000 mobile financial service (MFS) agents are suspected of being involved in the illegal flow of gambling funds. A list of these agents has been submitted to Bangladesh Bank, with recommendations for revoking their licenses and imposing fines.

Under the new law, anyone operating or promoting online gambling could face up to two years of imprisonment and fines of up to 10 million taka (approximately $81,845), or both. Online gambling is often disguised as gaming or entertainment apps, websites, and social media channels to deceive users.

Sections 20 to 22 of the Cybersecurity Act explicitly criminalize the operation of gambling platforms, fraudulent transactions, and manipulation activities. The CID urges the public to stay away from online gambling and raise awareness, especially among youth. The department also encourages citizens to report any suspicious gambling activities through official channels to support ongoing police efforts to tackle this issue.
