At the Global Game Connect (GGC 2026) summit, which opened in Colombo on March 16, 2026, Deputy Tourism Minister Ruwan Ranasinghe delivered a landmark speech, positioning the gaming industry as a primary engine for national economic recovery and regional innovation.
The two-day GGC 2026 summit, hosted by the leading platform HUIDU, was held at Cinnamon Life within the iconic $1.2 billion "City of Dreams Sri Lanka" complex. During the opening session, Minister Ranasinghe emphasized that the government’s vision extends beyond mere casino operations; it aims to transform Colombo into a regional hub for gaming technology and high-value investment. He noted that with the support of global industry giants, Sri Lanka is perfectly positioned to capture the next wave of technological innovation in the region.
Over the past few years, Sri Lanka’s gaming sector has evolved from small clubs into a highly regulated pillar of the tourism industry. The core strategy lies in attracting "high-value travelers," particularly leveraging its proximity to the massive Indian market. Despite a recent tax hike to 18% to bolster national reserves, the government has pledged to create a supportive regulatory and technological environment. Officials project the industry will contribute $250 million in annual revenue, supporting the ambitious goal of reaching 3 million international arrivals by 2026.
